He also experienced joint research with Japan, New Zealand, Europe, USA.

Andrea M Alexandre , Neuroradiologist, Editor Profiles

Doctor Alexandre received his Degree in Medicine cum Laude at the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome in 2008. He spent three months as medical elective student in the department of neurosurgery at the West London Neurosciences Centre, Hammersmith Hospital – Imperial College, and in the department of neurosurgery at the Royal London Hospital, The Barts and the London. He became specialist in radiology cum Laude at the Catholic University of Rome in 2014. He did a two-years fellowship in interventional neuroradiology at the NEURI, Brain Vascular Center, Beaujon Hospital – Bicêtre Hospital, in Paris. Since the end of 2015 he works as a neuroradiologist and interventional neuroradiologist in the department of radiology and neuroradiology at the Fondazione Policlinico Universitario A.Gemelli, in Rome. He currently serves as reviewer for the journals: Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, Annals of Neurodegenerative Disorders and he is part of the Editorial Board member for EC Neurology journal.

Daniel Filipe Borges is currently Adjunct Professor of Clinical Physiology, as chair of Neurophysiology and Electroencephalography curricular units at Coimbra Health School and also Scientific Coordinator of the first Portuguese Post Graduated Course in Electroencephalography (EEG). As clinical (neuro)physiologist, he is internship supervisor and coordinator of the Neurophysiology Laboratory and Long-Term Epilepsy Video-EEG Monitoring Unit in the Neurology Department at Hospital Pedro Hispano, Matosinhos, Portugal, and additionally a member of its Advisory Board. The department has a wide range of technology in the neurophysiology field, allowing the execution of EEG in all ages including in wards, ICU/NICU, 24-hour ambulatory EEG, prolonged EEG studies aiming epilepsy surgery, semiological seizure classification and differential diagnosis, as well as electromyography, multimodal evoked potentials and sleep medicine diagnostic procedures. Professionally, he collaborated with the Paediatric Neurology Department in Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Lisboa Central - Hospital Dona Estefânia and the Refractory Epilepsy Reference Center at Centro Hospitalar de Lisboa Ocidental. Academically, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Neurophysiology, followed by a postgraduate programme in Clinical Neuropsychology, which expedite him to start the faculty practice at age 23. Recently he obtained the specialist title in Neurophysiology and presently is a PhD candidate in Neuroscience - Clinical Neurosciences, Neuropsychiatry and Mental Health at Faculty of Medicine – Porto University. He is Member of the Portuguese Society of Neurology, Portuguese League Against Epilepsy and Portuguese Society of Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine.


Calixto Machado Curbelo , Senior Professor, Editor Profiles

Dr. Calixto Machado graduated as MD in 1976. He continued his medical training to become Specialist in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology, First Degree in 1980, and Second Degree in 1984. In 1994 he became PhD, and in 2002 he was the youngest Dr. in Sciences (PhD - Second Degree) in his country. Dr. Machado received clinical training in specialized neurology centers in Sweden, Denmark, Canada, Italy, Austria, and the US. During the last 30 years he has run many research protocols, such as: brain death, coma, persistent vegetative states and other disorders of consciousness, stroke, autism, etc. He has published more than 450 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, and 7 books. His Book “Brain Death: A Reappraisal” has been recognized with great enthusiasm among neurologist, neurosurgeons, intensivists, and physicians specialized in transplants.

B.S. in Animal Biology (1993), University Henri Poincare, France, M.S. (1995) and Ph.D. in Neuroscience (2000), University Louis Pasteur, France. Doctoral work with Valerie Simonneaux and Paul Pevet – circadian and photoperiodic regulation of melatonin synthesis in the rodent pineal gland. Postdoctoral work, Neurobiology/Visual Science, University of Alabama at Birmingham with Stuart C. Mangel – circadian clock control of the light responses of retinal cells (1999-2005). Joined the faculty of The Ohio State University in 2005 (research tract) and moved to The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 2009 (tenure track). Work has since focused on two areas of research: 1) role of circadian clocks in the development, maintenance, and function of retinal cells, and 2) the functional architecture of the network of coupled photoreceptors and its impact on signal processing in downstream retinal circuits and visual perception.
