Dr. Bastarrachea’s interest is the genetics of complex traits, in the areas of immunometabolism, obesity, and diabetes. He has established a Consortium Mexico–United States to develop a Research Program for Metabolic Diseases related to Nutrition to study the Genomic Basis of Postprandial Metabolism. He has lead efforts to develop the baboon as an experimental model for adipose tissue immunometabolism. He has been a key player in establishing the euglycemic-hyperinsulinemic clamp, sophisticated tracer methods and blood vessel catheterizations in baboons. He has recently developed a method of streptozotocin-induced diabetes in conscious tethered baboons, and engineered brown fat into skeletal muscle through state-of-the-art gene-based therapy for diabetes and obesity in the baboon model.
