Dear Colleagues,
Diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome represent major global health challenges, with rapidly increasing prevalence and profound impacts on morbidity, mortality, and healthcare systems worldwide. These interconnected metabolic disorders are characterized by complex pathophysiological mechanisms involving insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation, ?-cell dysfunction, adipose tissue dysregulation, and neurohormonal imbalance.
Metabolic syndrome significantly increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Despite advances in early diagnosis and therapeutic interventions, many patients continue to experience progressive metabolic deterioration and long-term complications, including microvascular and macrovascular disease.
Recent developments in molecular endocrinology, genomics, metabolomics, and biomarker discovery have expanded our understanding of disease heterogeneity. These advances are paving the way toward precision medicine approaches that enable individualized risk stratification, targeted pharmacologic therapy, and integrated care models tailored to patient-specific metabolic profiles.
Emerging therapeutic strategies—including GLP-1 receptor agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors, dual incretin-based therapies, and novel insulin-sensitizing agents—have demonstrated significant benefits beyond glycemic control, improving cardiovascular and renal outcomes. However, optimizing patient selection, long-term safety, and combination strategies remains an area of active investigation.
This Special Issue of Endocrinology and Disorders aims to bring together original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and clinical perspectives that explore:
