Introduction: Cancer treatment in pediatric patients has several side effects, with oral complications being the most frequent and debilitating for these patients, with a significant impact on their quality of life.
Chemotherapy lacks selectivity, that is, it acts either in tumor cells or functional cells, with rapid cell multiplication, as is the case of the oral mucosa when affected by this mobility of treatment becomes thinner and atrophied, giving rise to oral mucositis.
Finality: Since chemotherapy is a risk factor for oral mucositis, the main purpose of this work is to study some of the preventive and treatment measures related to this phenomenon ensuring the quality of life of children and young people.
Materials and Methods: To respond to the objectives of this study, we used bibliographical research of scientific articles in the following databases Library, Pubmed-Medline, Google academic, ScieLo, Bon and Bireme, from which 32 articles were selected, we also used the official page of INFARMED and International Agency for Research on Cancer.
Conclusion: Despite constant advances, QT still causes some adverse effects, including in the oral mucosa. OM is one of the most debilitating side effects for children/young oncologic. OM is associated with pain, nutritional impairment, impact on quality of life, changes in cancer treatment, risk of infection and high economic costs. Even so, there are some preventive treatments that can minimize the side effects of QT, namely OM.
